Portland Parks & Recreation is looking to hire more than 700 youths as lifeguards, swim instructors and water fitness trainers – and there’s no waiting until summer.
Each year, the bureau hires students 15 years and older for year-round and summer positions at the city’s 12 swimming pools. Hours are flexible and employees can work as little or much as they like, according to the bureau’s Aquatic Division.
Lifeguards start at $11.25 per hour, swim instructors at $11.75 and water fitness instructors at $12 per hour.
Parks & Rec offers certification classes throughout the school year, on weekends and during breaks, and also offers scholarships for all training classes.
Interested students can find out more about these jobs and career opportunities in general at the NW Youth Careers Expo on March 13, 2018, at the Oregon Convention Center. The Expo is the largest career exploration event of its kind in the Northwest and the bureau, as a Silver Sponsor, is a leader among employer supporters.
The bureau, with about 4,000 employees, manages the city’s parks, public places, natural areas, and recreational opportunities for all Portlanders.
