We’re just three weeks away from the NW Youth Careers Expo, the annual career exploration event that gives leading employers a chance to support today’s high school students and tomorrow’s workforce. This week, we’re highlighting the Arts & Communication Zone, a growing focus at the Expo.
This zone will feature a vibrant range of influential employers, including Wieden+Kennedy, The Oregonian, Swift, Instrument, Open Signal, Oregon Film and many more. Postsecondary partners include the University of Oregon, Clackamas Community College and the Art Institute of Portland.
In the Arts & Communication Zone, students can:
- Connect with people who work in the mass media industry
- Explore the incredible diversity of creative careers being transformed by technology
- Learn about the skills & education needed to work in advertising, digital design, & multimedia journalism
- Discover what kind of exciting work is being done in Oregon
Wieden+Kennedy: The powerhouse ad agency best known for its work with Nike is one of the largest independently owned advertising agencies on the planet, with headquarters in Portland and seven offices around the world. Wieden+Kennedy hosts a popular Career Day every year where students learn about careers in design, advertising, marketing and media buying.
Oregonian Media Group: As a leading regional news source and publisher of The Oregonian/OregonLive, the Portland-based company serves readers and advertisers on print, digital and mobile platforms. Students can learn from professional journalists about the High School Journalism Institute, a weeklong summer residential program in Corvallis. The company is a Platinum sponsor of the Expo.
Instrument: Instrument is a digital creative agency in North Portland that builds brands, campaigns and experiences for every screen. This agency has hosted PWA Career Days and is committed to high school students. This is their first Expo!
Swift: Based in Portland, Swift is a strategic creative agency whose client roster includes Starbucks, Google, Nestlé, adidas, and YouTube. Like Wieden+Kennedy and the Oregonian Media Group, it also hosts a Career Day during the school year.
Oregon Film: Formerly known as the Governor’s Office of Film & Television and now celebrating its 50th year, Oregon Film promotes the film, video and multimedia industry in Oregon by marketing the state as a filming location and helping homegrown companies. At the Expo, students can learn about local crews who work year round on features, television, advertising and interactive games.
University of Oregon: The School of Journalism and Communication prepares students for careers in media studies, journalism, public relations, and advertising. At the Expo, students can meet with scholastic journalism specialists to learn about Next Generation Storytelling, a summer residential program in Eugene designed to help develop critical thinking, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
Art Institute of Portland: The nonprofit institute offers a range of programs in design and media arts, as well as one in fashion marketing.
So far, more than 7,000 students and about 190 exhibitors have registered for the 14th annual Expo on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the Oregon Convention Center. Students learn about career opportunities and the skills and education needed to be successful while employers meet motivated teens who can become today’s interns and tomorrow’s employees.
