This year’s NW Youth Careers Expo will feature a record number of exhibitors. We are delighted to count nearly a dozen colleges, universities and community colleges among them.

With two weeks to go to the March 14 event, 170 employers have signed up to participate in the Expo, where they can meet with some of the 7,000 high school students coming to learn more about well-paying jobs and careers.

These employers include public institutions Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon Tech and the University of Oregon, as well as Clackamas, Chemeketa, Klamath, Portland and Mt. Hood community colleges. In addition, private institutions will be represented by Pacific University and the University of Portland.

Here is a look at what to expect at the Expo from our education partners:

Four-year institutions (public)

OHSU: Oregon Health & Science University will be there in force, with a dozen programs represented, including the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing the Oregon Poison Center, the Brain Institute, the Institute for Environmental Health and the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

Oregon Tech: With campuses in Klamath Falls and Wilsonville, Oregon Tech prepares students for careers in engineering, healthcare and technology. The school is ranked No. 1 among Top Public Western Regional Colleges by U.S. News & World Report.

UO: The University of Oregon’s well-regarded School of Journalism and Communication will be among exhibitors in the new Arts & Communication Zone. Students are invited to apply for spot in Next Generation Storytelling, a summer residential program in Eugene designed to help develop critical thinking, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

Two-year institutions

Clackamas Community College in Oregon City will have staffers on hand to talk about healthcare, manufacturing, emergency services, horticulture/wine studies, fire science and the college’s Wilsonville Training Center.

Klamath Community College in Klamath Falls is sending its outreach and recruitment coordinator. This would be a good booth to visit for students to apply what they learn during their mock interview sessions at the Expo.

Portland Community College will have a large footprint, as usual, with technology-heavy programs covering the gamut from automotive service and computer applications to dental laboratory, health professions, veterinary technology and much more.

Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham will have people available to talk about Applied Technologies as well as the Auto, Engineering and Metals program.

Four-year institutions (private)

Pacific University in Forest Grove has a bigger reach than one might think with satellite campuses in Eugene, Hillsboro and Woodburn and a Hawaii office to serve the university’s large contingent from the Aloha State. Almost one in five undergraduates hail from Hawaii. The college offers a combination of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the liberal arts and sciences, education, business, optometry and the health professions.

University of Portland:  The Catholic institution in North Portland offers about 40 majors and nearly 15 graduate programs, including a School of Nursing, and has a strong community service ethic embedded into its undergraduate curriculum.
