PWA Virtual Career Insights into Healthcare

May 11 | 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

There is so much more to healthcare than doctors and nurses and so much more to a career than just a job. Learn about the power of community and the calling to serve as a healthcare professional in a variety of settings.  Join us for a short talk with two professionals, Dr. Maxine Dexter from Kaiser Permanente and Vi Ton from Multnomah County Health Department. This event is presented by the nonprofit the nonprofit Portland Workforce Alliance, in partnership with Oregon MESA.

Dr. Maxine Dexter, a pulmonologist at Kaiser Permanente and candidate for the Oregon House of Representatives. Born, raised, and educated in the Pacific Northwest, Maxine is a pulmonary (lung) and critical care doctor, working at Kaiser Permanente. She takes care of the sickest patients in the hospital, people on life support, people with COVID19. When she was 16, she got a union job at an Albertsons grocery store. She credits that job, with full benefits and good wages, to allow her to work her way through high school, college, and into medical school at the University of Washington. The first person in her family to graduate college, Maxine is passionate about the power of community and government support, and is now running for office to do all she can “to be sure each and every Oregonian gets the same shot that I got to achieve my dreams.”

Vi Ton is a recruiter for the Multnomah County Health Department. Vi was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She received her high school diploma at Benson Polytechnic high school and a Bachelor's degree in Business Management and Human Resources at Portland State University. She has worked at Multnomah County for over 13 years in various positions. Growing up her family used many of the services provided by the Health Department. Now as an adult, she is honored to be part of a diverse group of professionals providing services she once used as a young girl. She works hard sharing information to students and job seekers about career paths and job opportunities. She is passionate about seeking out people who want to make a difference in their communities by providing services and resources to the community.

This 30-minute career talk is part of MESA Week, a virtual opportunity to explore college-and-career options in STEM-related fields. Register for the entire series here.  See other PWA virtual career talks in May here.
