We’re a little over a month away from the NW Youth Careers Expo, the annual career exploration event that gives the community a chance to support its high school students and future workforce. This week, we’re highlighting the Arts & Communication Zone, a new focus at the Expo.

This zone will feature a vibrant range of influential employers, including Wieden+Kennedy, The Oregonian, Swift, Oregon Public Broadcasting, the Governor’s Office of Film & Television and many more. Postsecondary partners include the University of Oregon and Portland Community College.

In the Arts & Communication Zone, students can:

  •     Connect with people who work in the mass media industry
  •     Explore the incredible diversity of creative careers being transformed by technology
  •     Learn about the skills and education needed to work in multimedia, advertising and digital design
  •     Discover what kind of exciting work is being done in Oregon

Below is early information about some of our arts and communication exhibitors.

Governor’s Office of Film & Television:  The Oregon Film Office promotes the film, video and multimedia industry in Oregon by marketing the state as a filming location and helping homegrown companies. At the Expo, students can learn about local crews who work year round on features, television, advertising and interactive games.

Oregon Public Broadcasting: With roots that go back nearly 100 years to an experimental radio station, OPB is a private, nonprofit corporation. From its Portland headquarters, OPB offers multimedia programming featuring local and national news, the arts, music, food and more.

University of Oregon: The School of Journalism and Communication prepares students for careers in  media studies, journalism, public relations, and advertising. At the Expo, students can meet with scholastic journalism specialists to learn about Next Generation Storytelling, a summer residential program in Eugene designed to help develop critical thinking, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

Oregonian Media Group:  As a leading regional news source and publisher of The Oregonian / OregonLive, the Portland-based company serves readers and advertisers on print, digital and mobile platforms.  Students can learn from professional journalists about the High School Journalism Institute, a weeklong summer residential program in Corvallis.

Wieden+Kennedy:  The ad agency best known for its work with Nike is one of the largest independently owned advertising agencies in the world, with headquarters in Portland and seven offices around the world. Wieden+Kennedy hosts a popular Career Day every year where students learn about careers in design, advertising, marketing and media buying.

So far, more than 6,800 students and about 130 exhibitors have registered for the 13th annual Expo on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at the Oregon Convention Center. Students learn about career opportunities and the skills and education needed to be successful while employers meet motivated teens who can become today’s interns and tomorrow’s employees.

We’ll be adding more details about exhibitors as we receive them. (Arts and communication exhibitors: You may contact us at george@portlandworkforcealliance.org if you have additional information to share with students and educators prior to the Expo.)
